I have spent a decade running search engine optimization for funded SaaS companies and consumer apps, and my team runs link acquisition on client accounts every week. This guide covers the link building tools we pay for and the ones we tell clients to skip.
Acquiring backlinks takes more time and effort than any other part of search engine optimization. No software removes that. What the right tools do is compress a slow manual process into something a small team can run.
Your backlink profile now feeds two systems at once: Google’s ranking algorithm, and the large language models behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews. They reward different things, which is why most link building strategies underperform on one of them.
Below are 17 link building tools, the workflows connecting them, and the tactics worth your time.
What Are Link Building Tools?
Link building tools are software products that help you find, contact, earn and monitor backlinks from other websites. They do not build links for you. They compress the manual work into a runnable workflow.
A complete stack covers five jobs. Most link building software does one or two well and fakes the rest.
- Prospecting. Find relevant websites that could link to you.
- Qualification. Decide which link prospects are worth your time, on domain authority, traffic and topical relevance.
- Contact discovery. Find the right person and a working email address.
- Outreach. Send personalized emails, follow up, track replies.
- Monitoring. Watch your backlink profile, catch lost links, measure results.
No single link building tool covers every step well. The agencies with the best link building results combine research SEO tools, an outreach platform and a monitoring layer, and accept the overlap. Search engines reward the output, not the stack.
What Link Building Software Cannot Do
- It cannot make you worth citing. Every campaign that worked for me started with something an editor wanted to reference.
- It cannot buy relevance. A backlink analysis tool will show you 4,000 link opportunities, of which maybe 40 deserve a pitch.
- It cannot write the pitch. Automated personalization at scale burns a domain that took two years to build.
How I Evaluated These Link Building Tools
Here is how this guide was built.
- Every price was checked against the vendor’s own pricing page in July 2026, not copied from another roundup.
- The 17 tools listed are ones my team has paid for, run on a client account, or tested against a live campaign. Where I have not used something in production, I say so.
- Each was assessed on data quality, workflow depth, export limits, price against value, and support for AI visibility work.
- I excluded anything promising automated link acquisition, private blog networks, or guaranteed placements at volume.
- No affiliate links, and no vendor paid to appear.
If a price has moved since publication, tell me and I will fix it.
Who This Guide Is For
In-house SEO professionals, agency link builders, and founders doing their own SEO. It assumes you know what a backlink is and want to know which of the right tools to buy, in what order, and why. If you are buying for link building specifically rather than a general suite, start with the shortlist.
Is Link Building Still Relevant in 2026?
Yes, but the reason has shifted. Links matter less as a direct ranking lever and more as the mechanism that produces the brand mentions AI systems cite.
What Google Says About Links Now
Gary Illyes of Google has said publicly that links are not among the top three ranking factors, and that Google needs very few links to rank a page. Google also removed the word “important” from the links section of its spam policy.
Take that seriously without overreacting. Search engines still treat high-quality backlinks as signals of trust and authority, and quality backlinks still lead to higher search engine rankings. Google just weights them less than when PageRank was the whole game.
What the AI Citation Data Says
Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands and found brand web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, far ahead of backlinks at 0.218. A follow-up covering ChatGPT and Google AI Mode put YouTube mentions at 0.737 and branded anchor text at 0.527. Ahrefs notes correlation is not causation, and the sample skewed toward established brands.
The earned media data agrees. Muck Rack’s 2026 study of more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini found earned media accounts for 84% of all AI citations, while paid content accounts for 0.3%.A Stacker and Scrunch study found that distributing content through third-party news outlets produced a 239% median lift in AI visibility.
The money follows the data. Adobe completed a $1.9 billion acquisition of Semrush in April 2026, citing its own finding that AI traffic to US retail sites rose 269% year over year.
Links vs Brand Mentions: The Real Answer
Backlinks are not dead. They were demoted from the goal to the byproduct.
Think of it as a chain. Editorial coverage produces a brand mention. That mention usually carries a link. The link keeps the linking page discoverable in the search engine. The mention feeds the AI systems. You cannot manufacture the mention without doing the work that earns the link.
That is why 48.6% of SEO professionals now rate digital PR the single most effective tactic, ahead of guest posting at 16%, in Editorial.link’s 2026 survey of 518 practitioners.
The One Metric That Bridges Both Worlds
Branded anchor text. It correlates with AI visibility at 0.527, and it is the only signal in the Ahrefs data that requires a link to exist at all. A link with your brand in the anchor, inside editorial copy that also names you, does double duty: ranking signal for the search engine, entity recognition for the models.

Best Link Building Tool for Backlink Analysis: Ahrefs
Ahrefs stores 35 trillion external backlink records and 22.21 trillion internal links, refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes. If your link data has to be right, this is the default for link builders.
Best Link Building Tool for Outreach: Pitchbox
The strongest dedicated outreach platform for teams at volume. It integrates with the major SEO tools, so you can qualify link prospects without leaving it.
Best Link Building Tool for Backlink Monitoring: Linkody
It watches your website’s backlink profile around the clock and alerts you when links appear, change or vanish, at a fraction of what the all-in-one platforms charge.
Best Free Link Building Tools
You can run a credible campaign on zero budget. Google Search Console gives you your own backlink data. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools covers Site Explorer for verified domains. Moz Link Explorer is free, Screaming Frog crawls 500 URLs, and HARO, Source of Sources and Help a B2B Writer cost nothing.
How To Use Link Building Tools In Campaigns
Map link building tools to stages, not features. Buying an outreach platform before you have a qualified prospect list is the most expensive mistake in link building.
Map Link Building Tools to the Prospecting Stage
Start with competitor link data. Run a gap analysis in the Ahrefs Link Intersect tool or the Semrush backlink gap tool. Layer in Content Explorer to find the pages that attract links in your topic. Both exports become your first list of link opportunities.
Map Link Building Tools to the Outreach Stage
Find contacts with Hunter, load them into Pitchbox, BuzzStream or the Semrush Link Building Tool, then run a sequence with two or three follow-ups. The 2026 benchmark for generic cold email is a 3.43% reply rate, while Hunter reports 13% for link building outreach. Personalization is the difference.
Map Link Building Tools to the Tracking Stage
Confirm placements went live, and watch for links removed, switched to nofollow, or buried. Link monitoring measures the effectiveness of your link building efforts. Without it you are guessing.
Workflow Diagram for Solo Use
Google Search Console, Ahrefs Starter, Hunter’s free plan, a plain Gmail sequence, Linkody. Under $150 per month, end to end.
Workflow Diagram for Team Use
Ahrefs Standard plus Semrush Guru for research, Majestic Pro for Flow Metrics, Pitchbox Advanced as the outreach tool, Linkody Agency for backlink monitoring, Looker Studio on top. Most stacks break between qualification and outreach: teams build beautiful prospect lists, export to CSV, then lose two weeks finding contacts by hand.
Backlink Analysis Tools: The Research Layer
Backlink analysis reveals who links to your site and to your competitors. Every stage of link building rests on the backlink data underneath it, and on how closely it mirrors what the search engine sees.
1. Ahrefs
Ahrefs is the most trusted backlink analysis tool in the industry, running what is widely held to be the second most active web crawler after Google.
- Site Explorer: the full backlink profile for any domain, with referring domains, anchors, new and lost links.
- Link Intersect: compares you against up to 10 competitors to find domains linking to them but not you.
- Content Explorer: finds the pages that earn the most links in any topic.
- Broken Links report: surfaces dead outbound links on any domain without crawling it.
- Brand Radar: tracks brand mentions across AI answer engines, sold as an add-on.
Highlights
Raw backlink data quality, and it is not close. Ahrefs crawls 8 billion pages daily. Two recent additions matter: an MCP server piping Ahrefs data into Claude and ChatGPT, and a $29 Starter plan that gives small link builders an entry point.
Pricing
- Starter ($29 per month, monthly billing only)
- Lite ($129 per month)
- Standard ($249 per month)
- Advanced ($449 per month)
- Enterprise ($1,499 per month, annual only)
Extra seats cost $40 to $80 per month, and Brand Radar is a separate add-on from $199 per month. No free trial. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for verified site owners.
2. Semrush
Semrush is the only major platform where research and outreach live together. Adobe closed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, so the roadmap now sits inside Adobe’s brand visibility strategy.
- Backlink Analytics: referring domains, anchors, toxicity scoring, Authority Score.
- Backlink Gap: compares you against four competitors to reveal link building opportunities.
- Link Building Tool: turns prospects into a campaign, connects Gmail, sends outreach, tracks replies.
- Backlink Audit: flags toxic links and generates a disavow file.
Highlights
The handoff from gap analysis into the Link Building Tool. Competitor link data to a sent email in ten minutes, with a CRM no other research platform offers. Its index holds more than 43 trillion backlinks. If you want research and link building features in one subscription, buy this.
Pricing
- Pro ($139.95 per month)
- Guru ($249.95 per month)
- Business ($499.95 per month)
- Semrush One, the AI visibility track (from $199 per month)
AI visibility tracking sits in Semrush One, not the core plans.
3. Majestic
Majestic is the specialist’s tool. No keyword research, no rank tracking, no technical SEO audits. Just link intelligence, better than anyone at the price.
Its contribution is Flow Metrics. Trust Flow scores quality by proximity to trusted seed sites. Citation Flow scores raw quantity. Topical Trust Flow splits authority by category, so you can see whether a domain’s authority sits in your niche. The ratio between the first two is the fastest link quality check in SEO: high Citation Flow with low Trust Flow means a spammy profile.
Highlights
Clique Hunter, which finds domains linking to several competitors but not you. The cleanest prospecting workflow anywhere, on a Historic Index going back over a decade.
Pricing
- Lite ($49.99 per month, Fresh Index only)
- Pro ($99.99 per month, adds Historic Index and Clique Hunter)
- API ($399.99 per month)
7-day money-back guarantee.
4. Moz Pro and Link Explorer
Moz gave the industry Domain Authority, still the metric non-specialists recognize, which makes it useful for client reporting. Link Explorer covers inbound links, anchors, linking domains and Spam Score, alongside keyword research and rank tracking. Brand Authority is a fair proxy for the brand signal AI systems reward.
Highlights
The free tier is genuinely useful. Link Explorer, the domain authority checker and MozBar cost nothing and answer most questions website owners have about quality backlinks.
Pricing
- Starter ($49 per month)
- Standard ($99 per month)
- Medium ($179 per month)
- Large ($299 per month)
Annual billing saves around 20%. A 7-day free trial is available.
5. Google Search Console
The only tool that shows what the search engine actually sees. Every commercial index only approximates it.
The Links report gives website owners their top linking sites, top linked pages, top anchors and internal links, free. Sanity-check every paid tool against it. It is also the only home of the disavow tool and of manual action notices.
Ahrefs and Semrush: Research And Outreach Roles
Ahrefs and Semrush are the two platforms most link builders compare. They are not interchangeable. Ahrefs is a research tool. Semrush is a workflow tool.
Backlink Database Size Compared
Semrush claims 43 trillion backlinks. Ahrefs claims 35 trillion. Do not read much into the headline numbers. The vendors count different things, and index size says nothing about how many of those links are still live.
Index Freshness and Crawl Frequency
This is the meaningful difference between Ahrefs and Semrush. Ahrefs refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes and crawls 8 billion pages daily. Semrush updates daily. To confirm a link went live today, Ahrefs sees it first.
Backlink Gap Analysis in Both Tools
The Ahrefs Link Intersect tool compares you against up to 10 competitors. The Semrush equivalent caps you at four, plenty for most outreach campaigns. In a fragmented market, the extra six slots matter.
Native Outreach Integrations, and Which To Pick
Semrush wins outright: it ships an outreach tool with an email CRM inside. Ahrefs has none, so pair it with Pitchbox or BuzzStream.
If backlink analysis is the job, buy Ahrefs. If you want research, outreach campaigns and reporting in one subscription, buy Semrush. Agencies buy both.
Backlink Database: How To Evaluate One
A backlink database is only as useful as its coverage of the links you care about. Test it rather than trusting the marketing page. Index size is a floor, not a score. Crawl rate is the number that predicts data quality.
Export Sample Snapshots and Measure Index Overlap
Export snapshots of referring domains for the same target from two tools, deduplicate, and measure the agreement. Expect 40% to 70% overlap. The disagreement is where the link prospects your competitors have not found are hiding, and it is the argument for two subscriptions rather than one.
Test Freshness on Recently Published Links
Publish a page, earn a link to it from a site you control, and time how long each of your SEO tools takes to report it. It tells you more than any vendor comparison page.
Check Export Limits Before You Buy
Export caps are the hidden cost. Ahrefs Lite limits you to 2,500 rows per report. If your link building runs on competitor data at scale, that ceiling decides your plan before the link building features do.
Backlink Analysis And Backlink Gap Analysis
Competitor research finds new link opportunities in profiles that already exist. It is the highest-yield prospecting method in link building, because every domain on the list has already proven it will link to a site like yours.
How To Run a Competitor Backlink Analysis
Pick three to five true competitors, meaning sites competing for the same intent, not the same market. Load each into Ahrefs Site Explorer or Semrush Backlink Analytics and export referring domains, not backlinks. Unique referring domains correlate with search rankings more strongly than how many links you have.
How To Prioritize Targets by Authority and Relevance
Sort by Domain Rating, Authority Score or Trust Flow and cut everything below your threshold. A sensible B2B default is DR 30 and above with at least 1,000 monthly organic visits. Then filter for topical relevance using Majestic’s Topical Trust Flow. High quality links are relevant ones: a DR 80 link from an unrelated site is worth less than a DR 40 link from a publication your buyers read.
How To Perform a Gap Analysis for Quick Wins
Open Link Intersect, enter your domain and your competitors, then filter for domains linking to two or more of them but not you. Sort by authority. That list is the shortest path to quick wins, and in most accounts the first place I look for link opportunities.
Anchor Text Audit And Strategy
Anchor text is the most under-audited part of most backlink profiles, and it now carries more weight, because branded anchors feed AI entity recognition.
How To Extract Anchor Text Distribution
Pull the report from Ahrefs Site Explorer, Semrush Backlink Analytics or Google Search Console, export it, then bucket every anchor into five categories: branded, naked URL, generic, partial-match and exact-match.
How To Flag Over-Optimized Anchors
Treat any exact-match commercial anchor pointing at a money page as a risk until proven otherwise. If exact-match anchors exceed roughly 5% of your backlink profile, and especially if they cluster on one page, the pattern looks engineered to a search engine.
Recommended Diversified Replacements
A backlink profile that grew naturally is dominated by branded and naked-URL anchors, because that is how humans write. Replace exact-match requests in your outreach templates with brand-plus-descriptor anchors.
Branded anchor text correlates with AI visibility at 0.527, more than twice as strongly as total backlinks at 0.218. Chasing exact-match anchor text now costs you twice: in spam risk, and in lost AI visibility.
Broken Link Building: Process And Tools
Broken link building means finding dead links on someone else’s site, creating content that replaces what was lost, and asking them to point the link at yours instead. Low hit rate, high quality ceiling. The same crawl surfaces broken links on your own site.
Step 1: Collect Broken Links With a Crawler
Run Screaming Frog against a target site and filter for broken outbound links. Export the source page, destination URL and anchor: you need all three for the pitch. The Ahrefs Broken Links report finds dead links on any domain without crawling it.
Step 2: Create Replacement Content for Prospects
Do not send relevant prospects something vaguely related. Use the Wayback Machine to see what was there, then publish something better. Publishing original content is not optional here, it is the entire pitch.
Step 3: Build the Prospect List
Every site linking to the dead page is a prospect. Pull them from Best by Links in Ahrefs Site Explorer, filtered to 404s, then find contacts in Hunter.
Step 4: Craft Outreach Templates for Broken Links
The email that works is short and specific. Name the page, point at the dead link, offer your replacement in one line. Do not open with flattery. Editors smell a template from the subject line. Expect a low single-digit conversion rate. This is not a volume tactic. It is a way to earn a few contextually perfect quality links from pages that already rank.
Broken Link Checker Tools
A broken link checker finds dead links, either on your site or on a prospect’s. These are the link building tools that matter for it.
Screaming Frog for Site-Wide Dead Links
A desktop crawler that finds every broken internal and external link on a site of any size, exporting the source page, anchor and status code. Free up to 500 URLs. The paid licence is £199 per year, roughly $279, a flat fee with unlimited crawls.
Check My Links on Sample Pages
A free Chrome extension that highlights every broken link on the page you are viewing in just a few clicks. The right broken link checker for spot-checking a resource page, the wrong one at scale.
Detection Speed and Export Options Compared
Ahrefs is instant, because it queries an existing index rather than crawling. Semrush Site Audit takes minutes to hours. Screaming Frog is bounded by your machine, but it alone sees pages a crawler-blocked site would hide.
On exports, Screaming Frog writes to CSV with no row limits, while other SEO tools cap exports by plan tier. For dead-link outreach at scale, Screaming Frog is what you export from.
Tools For Building Links: Outreach Platforms
An outreach platform is where link prospects become quality backlinks. These link building tools manage outreach campaigns, automate follow-ups, and stop you pitching the same editor twice. Most link campaigns live or die here.
6. Pitchbox
Pitchbox is a comprehensive outreach platform built for in-house SEO professionals and agencies at scale.
It ships with prebuilt templates for standard link building strategies, including dead-link replacement and resource page outreach. Import prospects by CSV or use its discovery. It integrates with Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and Majestic, so authority metrics sit beside every prospect. Sequences, automated follow-ups and a unified inbox handle the outreach campaigns.
Highlights
Automated follow-ups. That is where the response rate lives, and the feature most teams underuse. The credit system is unusually transparent: one credit per website prospected, two per verified email.
Pricing
- Pro ($165 per month, 2 users, 2,000 outreach emails)
- Advanced ($420 per month, unlimited users, 5,000 emails)
- Scale ($675 per month, unlimited emails)
- Enterprise (custom)
A free trial is available and annual billing saves up to 30%.
7. BuzzStream
BuzzStream is a relationship-first outreach CRM for PR teams and link builders. Where Pitchbox optimizes for volume, BuzzStream optimizes for memory.
Give it a list of URLs and it builds a prospect inventory, detects contact details, and organizes everything by project. Its value shows on the second campaign, when it remembers you know an editor.
Highlights
Turning URL lists into prospect inventories, and never losing the history. It integrates with Ahrefs, Moz and Majestic so authority metrics appear inline.
Pricing
- Starter ($24 per month, 1 user)
- Group ($99 per month)
- Professional ($299 per month)
Free trial. Still the cheapest credible entry point into a real outreach tool.
8. Hunter
Hunter is the email layer of the stack. It does not build links. It makes link building possible.
Email Finder returns an address from a name and domain. Domain Search returns every email tied to a website. Email Verifier cuts bounce rates. Campaigns handles light sequencing.
Highlights
Accuracy and simplicity. Verify before you send: sender reputation cannot be bought back.
Pricing
- Free (50 credits per month)
- Starter ($49 per month, 2,000 credits)
- Growth ($149 per month, 10,000 credits)
- Scale ($299 per month, 25,000 credits)
Annual billing saves 30%.
9. Respona
Respona is a managed link placement service, not an outreach tool you operate yourself. The distinction matters, because it is still listed as software in most roundups.
You specify target pages, keywords, anchor preferences and site criteria. Respona’s team handles prospecting, outreach, negotiation, content and publishing. Standard turnaround is 28 days.
Highlights
It removes the operational burden entirely, and explicitly targets the listicle formats LLMs cite most often. Be clear-eyed, though: paying for placements sits close to Google’s link spam policies. Treat it as a commercial decision with real risk attached.
Pricing
From $100 per placement for DR 20+ sites up to $500 for DR 60+ domains, with bulk discounts reaching 60% at higher spend. Discounts start at $3,000 per month.
10. Postaga
Postaga is an AI-assisted tool that analyzes your site and suggests link building outreach campaigns likely to earn links. Its Opportunity Finder identifies the right contact at each target, pulls their details, then surfaces a personalization hook, which cuts the slowest part of the link building process: writing the first line of each email by hand. Paid plans with a free trial. This is the one tool here I have used in testing only, not on a client account, so weigh my read accordingly.
Digital PR And Source Request Platforms
Journalist sourcing is the most important category here, and the one where the naming trips people up.
HARO, Connectively and Featured: Three Products, One Company
All three names are owned by Featured. They are not the same product, and choosing between them is a real decision.
- HARO is the free email digest. Queries arrive in your inbox, you reply by email, no login required. Featured funds it through newsletter sponsorships, so it stays free for journalists and sources alike.
- Connectively is the platform version, relaunched on 2 June 2026 for people who want filtering, response tracking and a real interface. It runs as a standalone product alongside HARO.
- Featured relaunched as an AI assistant for PR, covering journalist requests, podcasts, bylined articles, speaking slots and GEO work in one interface. It shipped an MCP server in July 2026, the first source-request platform built for AI workflows rather than around them.
Most guides still tell you to sign up for a Connectively that Cision shut down in December 2024. That is the trap. Check the URL before you build a process on top of it.
11. HARO
HARO connects journalists seeking expert sources with people who can comment. Register as a source, take the email digests, reply to relevant queries. If a journalist uses your response, you usually get a quote and a link.
Highlights. Volume, and it is free. The digests produce a steady stream of link building opportunities for anyone answering consistently and fast. Single queries often draw 100 to 300 pitches, so scan within the hour and skip anything outside your expertise.
Pricing. Free for both sources and journalists.
12. Featured.com for Prioritized Source Matches
Featured matches subject matter experts to publishers who need expert-led content, surfacing prioritized source matches rather than a firehose digest. It connects an expert with a publisher roughly every six seconds and serves around 2,500 publishers.
Highlights. Higher signal-to-noise than the raw digest, with a curated publisher side. This is the one I would put a busy founder on.
Pricing. Free starter tier, paid upgrades and per-answer add-ons.
13. Qwoted
Qwoted matches experts to journalists using profile-based AI matching rather than an email digest. Journalists can find you proactively, a structural advantage no digest offers.
Highlights. Quality over quantity. Fewer spam pitches per query, so you compete against a smaller field. Use it if you want Forbes, Reuters and CNBC.
Pricing. Free tier with limited pitches. Paid plans run roughly $149 to $279 per month.
14. Source of Sources and Help a B2B Writer
Source of Sources was built by Peter Shankman, who founded HARO in the first place. Free, more curated, lower volume, and reportedly the highest do-follow rate in the category.
Help a B2B Writer works the same way but serves content marketers rather than journalists. Pick the categories where you have real expertise and only relevant requests reach your inbox, often published within days. It cannot guarantee a link, since that depends on the publication, but it is the single best free tool for B2B SaaS.
Why Journalist Sourcing Matters More in the AI Era
Because AI systems read the coverage, not your website. This is where link building and GEO converge. Muck Rack found that the journalists PR teams pitch most actively overlap by only 2% with the journalists AI models actually cite for their brand.
That 2% is the biggest strategic gap in link building right now.
Internal Linking: The Link Building You Fully Control
Internal links are the cheapest link building you will ever do. You own every one, they need no outreach, and they help every search engine understand your structure. Most sites I audit leave more on the table in internal links than in their whole external campaign.
15. Link Whisper
Link Whisper is a WordPress plugin that suggests relevant internal links as you write, in the editor. It finds orphan pages, reports on internal link distribution, and bulk-inserts internal links across an archive in just a few clicks.
Highlights
On any site over 100 posts, it pays for itself in a week.
Pricing
From $97 per year for a single site. A Shopify version starts at $7 per month.
16. AIOSEO Link Assistant
AIOSEO’s Link Assistant does the same job inside the All in One SEO plugin: internal link suggestions, orphan page detection, distribution reporting. Worth it if you already run AIOSEO for schema and sitemaps. If internal links are the only reason you are buying, Link Whisper is more capable.
AIOSEO starts at $49.60 per year, but Link Assistant requires AIOSEO Pro, from $199.60 per year on introductory pricing. Cheaper tiers do not include it, a detail most roundups get wrong.
How To Run an Internal Linking Audit
Crawl your site with Screaming Frog and sort by inlinks ascending. Every page with zero or one internal link is an orphan, losing authority it should receive. Fix the top 20 by traffic potential first. Ahrefs and Semrush both report internal links in their site audit modules, so you can run this without a desktop crawler.
Backlink Monitoring And Disavow Workflows
Backlink monitoring tells you which quality backlinks survived, which vanished, and whether your link building efforts worked. Without it, your reporting is fiction.
17. Linkody
Linkody monitors backlinks around the clock and alerts you when links are added, changed or lost. It reports anchor text, dofollow and nofollow attributes, domain authority and spam score, and plugs into Google Search Console.
Highlights
It replaces a spreadsheet at a price that needs no business case. White-label PDF reporting is included, which matters for agencies.
Pricing
- Webmaster ($14.90 per month, 2 domains, 500 links)
- Advanced ($24.90 per month)
- Pro ($49.90 per month)
- Agency ($99.90 per month)
- Agency XL ($153.90 per month)
30-day free trial.
How To Set Up Backlink Monitoring Alerts
Create an alert in Ahrefs Alerts, Semrush Backlink Audit or Linkody for new and lost backlinks. Set it weekly, not daily: daily alerts become noise inside a month. Google Alerts covers unlinked brand mentions in parallel, free. Every tool here emails natively. For Slack, route it through Zapier so a lost link reaches a human inside 24 hours.
How To Track Lost Links Weekly
Pull the report every Monday and categorize each loss: page deleted, link removed, site down, switched to nofollow. Only “link removed” is worth chasing, and a polite email recovers a surprising number.
Disavow Candidate Reports, and When To Actually Use Them
Semrush Backlink Audit and Linkody both generate disavow candidate reports for toxic links. Both make it far too easy to disavow links you should leave alone.
John Mueller of Google said in March 2026 that the disavow file is a tool and not a religion, and that most sites do not need it. Google’s algorithms already ignore most spammy links.
Use it in two situations only: a manual action citing unnatural inbound links, or documented evidence of a negative SEO attack correlated with a ranking drop. Otherwise leave it alone. Disavowing legitimate links strips the signal they contribute.
How To Build Links: Tactics And Tool Use
The right tools do not build links. Link building strategies do. Here is how the tactics map to the software.
Digital PR and Original Research
The highest-rated of all link building strategies right now, and the only one that produces a link and a brand mention in the same placement. Build a data story, pitch journalists, earn the coverage. Original data will attract links passively for years and feeds the statistics AI systems love to cite. Tools: Qwoted, HARO, BuzzStream.
Skyscraper and Guest Post Workflows
The Skyscraper Technique means finding the page that has earned the most links on a topic, building something better, then pitching everyone who links to it. Tools: Ahrefs Content Explorer, Site Explorer, Pitchbox.
Guest posting is the most widely used of the classic link building strategies and increasingly the least effective. Research suggests 85.3% of guest posting sites are low quality: DR under 40, fewer than 10,000 monthly visits. Use it selectively.
Unlinked Brand Mentions
Someone already wrote about you and forgot the link. Find them, ask, convert. The fastest win available to any established brand, and the one most teams never run. Tools: Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush Brand Monitoring, Google Alerts.
How To Document Outreach Sequences and Follow-Ups
Write the sequence down before you send anything: initial pitch, follow-up at day four, final follow-up at day ten, then stop. Log every touch in your outreach platform, not someone’s inbox.

Best Link Building Metrics, Reporting, And ROI
KPIs To Track Per Link Building Campaign
- Referring domains earned per link building campaign, not total backlinks
- Average DR or Authority Score of earned links
- Reply rate and placement rate
- Cost per acquired link
- Branded mentions earned, linked and unlinked
- AI citations earned, tracked separately
Dashboard for Links and Referral Traffic
Pull backlink data from your SEO tools, link data from Google Search Console, and referral traffic from GA4 into Looker Studio. Show referring domains and referral traffic on one timeline. The relationship between the two is the story clients want, and the only view that gives them the complete picture.
How To Calculate Cost Per Acquired Link
Total campaign cost, including tooling, content and salary time, divided by links earned. The average price SEOs consider acceptable for one high-quality backlink is $508.95, per a 2026 survey of 518 SEO professionals by Editorial.link. If you are well above that and the links are not exceptional, your process is the problem. Benchmarks: a 5% to 10% reply rate is good, 15% excellent, and 20% to 30% of replies convert.
How To Attribute Links to AI Citations
The reporting gap almost nobody has closed. A 2026 survey of 500 SEO professionals found 74% believe backlinks affect AI search visibility, but only 24% actively track it.
Track it. Use Ahrefs Brand Radar or Semrush’s AI visibility toolkit to log which pages get cited in AI answers, then cross-reference against pages you earned links to. That correlation, or its absence, tells you more about your link campaigns than any DR chart.
Checklist: Broken Links, Backlink Database, And Anchor Text Audits
Run this quarterly with the link building tools you already own. Half a day, and it catches problems before they become ranking problems.
Run a Broken Link Checker Across Your Main Site
Crawl with Screaming Frog. Export all 4xx and 5xx internal and external links, then fix or remove every one. Broken links signal neglect to crawlers and readers alike.
Export a Backlink Database Snapshot
Export referring domains from Ahrefs or Semrush, date the file, archive it. You will want the comparison the first time a client asks why traffic dropped.
Audit Anchor Text and Save Recommendations
Export the distribution and bucket it. Flag anything over-optimized. Write down what a natural backlink profile looks like for your site, and brief future link building campaigns against it. Monthly, review lost and new links. Quarterly, redo the audit and the gap analysis.
Appendix: Tool Trial Tests And Comparison Tasks
Run these before you commit budget.
Run Trials for Ahrefs and Semrush
Semrush offers a 7-day trial and includes rank tracking, site audits and link building outreach in one subscription. Ahrefs offers no trial, so use the $29 Starter plan as your test. Run both in the same week on the same domain.
Execute an Identical Backlink Gap Analysis in Both
Same domain, same four competitors, in Link Intersect and the Semrush backlink gap tool. Export both and compare the prospect lists.
Document the Differences and Capture Screenshots
Deduplicate the exports and count the domains each tool found that the other missed. That number tells you whether you need one tool or two. Screenshot the same report in both for whoever signs off the budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Link building tools are software products that help you identify link building opportunities, analyze competitor strategies, manage outreach campaigns and track the backlinks you acquire. They automate the repetitive parts of acquiring backlinks, not the judgment.
Yes, though its role has shifted. Google downgraded links as a ranking factor, and Gary Illyes has said they are not in the top three. But links remain a strong signal, and the editorial coverage that produces links also produces the brand mentions AI systems cite. Earned media accounts for 84% of AI citations, per Muck Rack’s 2026 analysis of 25 million cited links. Effective link building is now as much an AI visibility play as a search rankings play.
Ahrefs, for raw backlink analysis. The largest live index, the freshest data and the most reliable prospecting workflows make it a great link building tool for anyone whose work starts with research. If you need research and outreach in one subscription, Semrush is the better buy. For assessing link quality, Majestic’s Trust Flow and Citation Flow are unmatched at the price.
Ranked by what actually works: digital PR, original research and data studies, journalist sourcing through HARO and Qwoted, dead-link replacement, unlinked brand mention reclamation, selective guest posting. Volume tactics are finished. High quality links from topically relevant sites are the whole game.
Fewer than you think. Gary Illyes has said Google needs very few links to rank a page, and around 66% of web pages have zero backlinks at all. Ten links from ten relevant websites beat a hundred from one. You can also get there without paying for software: Google Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Moz’s free tier, Screaming Frog’s 500-URL crawl and the free journalist platforms cost nothing between them.
No. They compress effort. They do not create the thing worth linking to. Every one of the successful link building campaigns I have run started with something genuinely worth citing, and no software substitutes for that.
Incorporate Link Building Seamlessly Within Your SEO Strategy
Holding a prominent position in search engine results still demands a steady commitment to link building. The work now serves two audiences, and the second reads mentions rather than counting links.
You do not need every one of these link building tools. The right tools for you are one research platform, one outreach tool, one monitoring layer, and the discipline to run the process every week. No link building software replaces the last item. Choose the ones that suit you and your needs, then go and earn something worth linking to. That part was never automatable.
